Bombanana vs Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: What Changes
The shared idea
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (Steel Crate Games, 2015) invented the format: one player sees the bomb and cannot read the manual; the others hold a printed manual and cannot see the bomb; everyone talks. BOMBANANA! openly builds on it — Lefto’s store page jokes that the game might be called “friendslop” and prefers “argument simulator”.
What Bombanana changes
| Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes | BOMBANANA! | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 1 defuser + 1 or more “experts” | Exactly 3, each with a copy |
| Who touches the bomb | The defuser, who can see it | The Blind Monkey, who cannot see colours or screens |
| Who sees the bomb | The defuser | The Deaf Monkey, who cannot hear anyone |
| Who reads the manual | The experts, who can talk freely | The Mute Monkey, who cannot talk at all |
| Manual | Free PDF, printable | In-game book only, no PDF |
| Communication | Voice, unrestricted | Game voice for two roles, emotes and gestures for the third |
| Chaos | None; the bomb is the only enemy | Slapping, thrown bottles, radio noise, power outages, CHAOS modules |
| Modes | Bombs of increasing complexity, custom missions | 30-level campaign, Endless waves, Custom |
| Price | Around $15 | $7.99 |
What the three-way split does to a session
In KTANE the bottleneck is the defuser’s description. In BOMBANANA! the bottleneck moves every module: the Deaf Monkey cannot hear the answer, the Blind Monkey cannot see the colour, and the Mute Monkey has the answer and no mouth. Solving anything takes a chain — describe, read, gesture, say, repeat — that the game’s tips spend ten points on. The upside is that no single player can carry; the downside is that a weak link anywhere ends the bomb.
Which one your group wants
- Pick KTANE if you have two players, or a group that enjoys the puzzles themselves; its modules are deeper and its manual rewards study.
- Pick BOMBANANA! if you have exactly three, want something that works with strangers from a lobby browser, and want the arguments to be the point. Its Steam reviews are almost entirely about the slapping.
